Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance

You can be a general, or you can be dinner. I don't really care which... But do try to show a little initiative, would you?
— Ashnard to Petrine.

Ashnard (アシュナード), often known as Mad King Ashnard, was the king of Daein during the Mad King's War. He gained power by tricking his father into signing a blood pact, and waited until every successor to the throne had died to end it. He then assassinated his father and became king. His plan was to unleash Yune from Lehran's Medallion, so he started a global war by first attacking the neighboring country of Crimea. He easily overpowered the country and killed its leaders, except for the publicly unknown princess, Elincia. He then went on to invade Gallia, the home of the beast Laguz. By the end of Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, he is killed, leaving Daein without a ruler. The country was later taken over by Begnion. He is a playable character in the trial maps after beating Path of Radiance 15 times.

Death quote

Heh heh heh heh. You've done well to have grown so strong. At last, I have gained a foe worthy enough to test my sword. Excellent! Enjoy my might to your heart's content!
— Ashnard's first death quote in Hard Mode in Path of Radiance.
Heh heh...excellent...Excellent! So good! More...more, I say! At this time of ascension, it's not enough...not

enough...

— Ashnard's second death quote in Hard Mode, and only death quote on other difficulties, in Path of Radiance.
Good! How my heart quickens! We must do this...again...
— Ashnard, in Smash Brethren 1 in Awakening.
Nngh... How could I lose to such...rabble...
— Ashnard, as an NPC in Smash Brethren 2 in Awakening.
Heh heh... Yes! Finally a battle...worth fighting...
— Ashnard, in Smash Brethren 3 in Awakening.
Such strength... Good... The strong deserve to win...
— Ashnard, in Rogues & Redeemers 1 in Awakening.
Heh heh heh... So, these wretches have a few decent fighters after all...
— Ashnard, as an NPC in Rogues & Redeemers 2 in Awakening.
Nngh... You see? This is why I fight... To get a taste of something greater...
— Ashnard, in Rogues & Redeemers 3 in Awakening.

Battle quotes

One blow. For nameless wretches like you, one blow is more than enough.
— Ashnard, in Path of Radiance.
[...] Heh heh heh. I remember that stance well. So your father taught you swordplay, did he? How very happy that makes me. [...] You? Cut me down? Heee... Good. If you possess the strength to do so, then so be it. That process is the principle on which my ideal world operates. [...]
— Ashnard, when fighting Ike in Path of Radiance
[...] You ask that of me? You? A girl? Pah! Trivial. You're not worth the effort it would take to kill you. [...] Are you... Gawain's daughter? [...] Heh heh... Hwah hah hah hah... Wheeee haaa haaa haaaaaarrr! Perhaps I'll kill you after all! If you are their child, you get special privileges! Show me your might!
— Ashnard, when fighting Mist in Path of Radiance
[...] What? You again, Princess Crimea? I told you, you are not the foe I seek. [...] In the world I am creating, only those with power will be allowed to live. Hurry and die, weakling!
— Ashnard, when fighting Elincia in Path of Radiance
Is that you, Tauroneo? As I thought... You betrayed me after all. [...] In my father's time, there was a man who was one of the Four Steadfast Riders. That man grew old and useless, and retired from the front lines. How does his story end, you ask? Come, let us write it together. [...] Heh heh heh... Will history judge me to be just or evil? We will not know until all of this is finished. [...]
— Ashnard, when fighting Tauroneo in Path of Radiance
Who are you, dog? [...] You're some nobody who turned traitor and joined the Crimeans? I've no interest in you. Begone. [...]
— Ashnard, when fighting Haar in Path of Radiance
Annoying little insect. Whose path is it that you think to block? [...] Are you complaining to me? Come back some other time. I'm busy. [...] Eh? Who are you talking about? The name is unfamiliar... I don't think we ever had such a general. [...] This is a waste of time. Leave my sight at once. [...]
— Ashnard, when fighting Jill in Path of Radiance
That is not the extent of your might, beast tribe warrior! I will not allow you to die while the great power within you still slumbers. Release your rage! Release your hate! Show me the fury you keep inside!
— Ashnard, when fighting a Beast Laguz in Path of Radiance
Hawks of Phoenicis! How strong are you that Begnion should fear you so? I trust I may expect good things from our battle.
— Ashnard, when fighting a Hawk Laguz in Path of Radiiance
Galdr singer, did you come here today so that I might take ownership of you? [...] You know that already, do you not? Why would you come all this way to ask something you already know? Do you wish me to deny it? [...] I do. Oh, how I do... It's true. The world may be destroyed by the coming of the dark god. Then again, it may not. I question the way in which our society is designed. No matter what strength a person has, it is the station he is born into that controls his destiny. And you cannot control where you will be born. Do you believe that a person of low birth should simply endure the curse of his station? I think not. If you are stronger than those around you, you should benefit from your strength. This is why I will use my strength to remake this world. Class and rank will not matter. Human and sub-human will not matter. The strong will possess everything. The weak will submit to their will. Is this not the meaning of peace? [...] That is the natural order. The only way for the weak to survive is to cling to the strong. Our discussion is over. Tell me, frail little bird who cannot fight; which do you choose? Submission? Or death? [...] Very well... Then I will give you the alternative! You will be a weight around my neck no more!
— Ashnard, when fighting Reyson in Path of Radiance
Heh heh... Heeee heeee heh... So you're still alive, are you? [...] Do you really want to do this? Do you believe you can defeat me? [...] Did you think I would allow that? Whaaaa haa haa haaaaa! [...]
— Ashnard, when fighting Ena in Path of Radiance
[...Eh? You're not human. But your aura... You're not a beast, nor a bird... You must be a dragon!]/[A white dragon! To meet with you here... Wheeee haa haa haaaa! For me, there is no greater joy!] [...] And that is? [...] That... That is what you want? Whaaa haaa haaa haaaaa! Fool! There never was such a cure! [...] Tell me, dragon, were you our Worm? Heh heh heh. I see... So your goal is to stop the Goldoans from fighting. Tsk, tsk, tsk! [...] Despise me! Loathe me! Whaaa haa haa haaaaaa! I will feast on your hatred! Let your hate build, dragon! Attack me with everything you have! I know your strength is not gone yet!
— Ashnard, when fighting Nasir in Path of Radiance
Oh, the king of hawks! Meeting your feathered carcass here today is... Fantastic! I am so pleased! [...] Waaaaa haaaa haaa! Heeee heee haaa! Perfect! PERFECT!!! That is what war is all about! [...]
— Ashnard, when fighting Tibarn in Path of Radiance
[...] What's this? Do you wish to return to Daein's loving embrace? [...] Enough of your lies, crow. Even now, your beady eyes look to find a chink in my armor. [...]
— Ashnard, when fighting Naesala in Path of Radiance
You're the one they speak of in whispers... The lion king's shadow. What are you doing so far from your body, shadow? Am I so terrible that your king hides in fear? [...] What impudence! Are you prepared become a pile of bones for your king? You'll make a fine snack!
— Ashnard, when fighting Giffca in Path of Radiance
Who are you, dog?
— Ashnard's SpotPass parley quote in Awakening.
Don't disappoint me!
— Ashnard, in a SpotPass battle in Awakening.
The things I'm willing to do...
— Ashnard's SpotPass recruitment quote in Awakening.
Hmph... You're outmatched.
— Ashnard, in Smash Brethren 1 in Awakening.
You wear a bold expression, but you're outmatched.
— Ashnard, when fighting Walhart in Smash Brethren 1 in Awakening.
Heh, I think you need a lesson in how powerless you really are.
— Ashnard, in Smash Brethren 3 in Awakening.
Really? Nonsense like that requires more persuasive evidence!
— Ashnard, when fighting Walhart in Smash Brethren 3 in Awakening.
Heh, I see the conviction in your eye. Now, fight me with all you've got!
— Ashnard, in Rogues & Redeemers 1 in Awakening.
I'm concerned with winning.
— Ashnard, when fighting Cherche in Rogues & Redeemers 1 in Awakening.
Ha ha! Yes... Strike with all your power! Let me delight in it!
— Ashnard, in Rogues & Redeemers 3 in Awakening.
Damn you and damn the wyvern. All that matters is I win!
— Ashnard, when fighting Cherche in Rogues & Redeemers 3 in Awakening.
